Though the revolt of 1857 proved unsuccessful, it produced many far reaching consequences. Some of the most important result of the revolt are as follows:

The British parliament in 1858 passed “An Act for better government ” by which the responsibility of administration of India passed into the hands of British parliament and the rule of company came to an end. The Board of Council was abolished. A secretary of state of India was appointed. The designation(post) of Govern General was changed into viceroy .

As Nana Sahib could not be traced after his escape to Nepal, the office of Peshwa was abolished. The title of Mughal Emperor was also abolished after the death of Bahadur Shah II.

3.CHANGE IN BRITISH POLICY TOWARDS INDIAN STATES:

To appease native princes, the English declared that they would honour all the treatises and agreements signed between the company and native rulers. The policy of doctrine of lapse was cancelled. The Indian princes were assured that their territories would not be annexed anymore.

4.REORGANISATION OF THE ARMY:

The percentage of English soldiers were increased to create a favourable ratio against Indian soldiers. Indians were removed from important posts like artillery and other higher posts.

5.QUEEN’S PROCLAMATION:

Transfer of power from East India Company to crown was declared by the Queen’s Proclamation which was read by Lord Canning on 1st November 1858 at a grand durbar held at Allahabad. By it Queen Victoria of England directly assumed the responsibility of the Indian administration in her own hands.

6.ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION:

The economic exploitation of the country was an inevitable consequence of the revolt of 1857. According to Dr. R.C.Majumdar “The extinction of company’s rule brought in grave economic priest to India”.

7.DIVIDE AND RULE POLICY:

The policy of divide and rule became a sneet anchor of British administration and all possible efforts were made to widen the gulf between the hindus and muslims after the revolt of 1857.

CONCLUSION:

Thus, the sacrifices of great Indian leaders like Lakshmi Bai, Kunwar Singh, Tantia Tope, Nana Sahib, etc. developed the feeling of nationalism among the Indians. According to Tara Chand, “The memory of 1857 substantiated the later movement, infused courage to the hearts of the fighters”.
