MAIN PROBLEMS OF
INDIAN AGRICULTURE | ALL ABOUT INDIA
Agriculture
in India is very important commercially as well as economically. Agriculture
provides employment to the maximum population in India (about 70%). It is a big
source of National Income. Agriculture provides food for the huge population of
the country. It provides raw material to the agro based industries. E.g. cotton
textile , sugar , flour mills , etc. It directly or indirectly influences
international trade. India earns a lot of foreign exchange from the export of
cotton textile , jute product , sugar , wheat , lax , reisin , spices , coffee
, tea , etc. In India most of the agriculture is of subsistence type where the
farmer grow crops for his family only with very less surplus for sale.
MAIN PROBLEMS OF INDIAN AGRICULTURE:
1. Small and fragmented land holding that reduces
production.
2. Inferior seeds , manure , fertilizer , biocide ,
etc. fails to utilize the maximum producing capacity of field.
3. Lack of irrigation in many places lead to crop
failure.
4. Soil erosion reduces fertility by remaining the top
soil.
5. Inadequate storage capacity often damaged the
produced crops.
6. Inadequate transport facilities hamper production
and fail to reach the crops to markets in time.
7. Scarcity of capital causes failure in achieving
high levels of production.
8. Lack of mechanization reduces rate of production.
9. Low yield of crop per hectare.
10. Great number of small and medium farmers as well
as landless farmers.
11. Most of the farmers are not properly trained in
agriculture.
12. Lack of use of modern technology in agriculture
due to lack of knowledge how to use it.
13. Little or almost no use of High Yielding Variety
(HYV) of seeds.
14. Reduction of agricultural land due to high
pressure of population.
15. Very less amount of per capita land for agriculture.
16. Low price of agricultural product compared to cost
of production.
17. Lack of loan and insurance facilities for
agriculture.
18. Damage of crops due to floods , drought and other
natural calamities.
19. Lack of godowns and cold storages for finished
product.
20. Improper use of chemical fertilizer damages the
crops.
